Reverse Autism Burnout: The First Step in Calming and Connecting to a Child with Autism
The first step in Autism: The Spiritual Approach to Intervention® is to reverse autism burnout. I call this Balance Your Energy Bank Account— for both you and the child in your care. Let’s face it. When we get to the point of burnout, nothing works. We feel agitated, exhausted, and all this can lead to the feeling of hopelessness. We can give up and move into simple survival.
But we really can change all that. And we must reverse burnout and energize if we expect to live a joyful life and connect with others, in particular a child on the spectrum who is so sensitive to energies.
Balance Your Energy Bank Account: Try This Simple Exercise for Adults
As educators, therapists and parents, burnout is the most prevalent block to achieving the connections and results we desire when working with children. But when we talk about self-care, the most common response is “who has time for self-care?” We equate taking care of ourselves to adding long baths, daily exercise, or a complete revamp of our diet and lots of me time. This is far from true.
Try this quick and easy exercise, enjoy the benefits and reverse burnout:
Remember back to when you were a child. Really—take a moment. Close your eyes. What are you doing? Riding a bike? Playing in water? Reading a book?
What I hear from many of you is that you no longer have time to spend doing this thing that gave you so much joy back then. Try this instead. Each night before you fall asleep at night, visualize yourself riding that bike, or read just one page of a classic novel, or imagine yourself splashing at the beach. 30 seconds is all it takes.
It is scientifically proven that a simple visualization causes the same changes in the body that the actual experience does. See how your body feels when you perform this visualization. Nice, right? This is an energy recharge. In 30 seconds or less.
You can add these short visualizations throughout your day, too. With this one recharge exercise, you can start feeling better. And the more energy you gain, the more energy you’ll have to do the things that charge you up even more.
Calming Uncontrolled Energy in Children with Autism: Some Quick Tips
We need to reverse autism burnout for kids, too. Educators and parents alike often ask this very good questions: Why would I want to charge a child’s energy bank account when he is already overflowing with energy. He runs. He jumps. Sometimes he even hits and screams to get out his extra energy. Why on earth would I want to energize him?
The truth is, in the Balancing Your Energy Bank Account process, Balance is the key. Children, on the autism spectrum or not, get wired up when something is out of balance. As adults, we can experience this, too.
Some quick tips from the Balance Your Energy Bank Account process to try with the child in your care who is clearly out of balance:
Observe: Often we want to jump in right now with one more solution to try. When we spend a concentrated amount of time observing him, whether he is verbal or non-verbal, he will show us what he needs for balance. Even if he only calms for a few minutes or seconds, observe what’s different at that moment and give him more of that.
Trust yourself: Believe what you see in your observations. We can often get so caught up in next action or in our own frustration, we discount what’s right in front of us. Your own intuition is your very best friend. We often get a sense of what a child needs for balance and discount it. As long as it is a do-no-harm solution, try it. Believe in your internal messages.
